Light Reading's 2008 series continues with a discussion between artist Lawrence Abu Hamdan and writer Oliver Rees. A selection of Abu Hamdan’s work will be exhibited and screened at the event to address the employment of performance, sound, speech and image in the description and reduction of Architectural space. Moving through other different visual and audible prompts including the paintings of Joseph Gandy and words of George Perec, the two will discuss the development and utilisation of existing tools or languages that offer not only a different understanding of space but attempt to transcend the privacy and individuality of representation. Abu Hamdan’s Work, in which Rees regularly participates and performs, is chiefly concerned with the re-imagination of our architectural surroundings and often employs the ephemeral and intangible nature of sound to explore the built environment. In combination with his use of sound Abu Hamdan’s processes also include compilations of film, performance, writings, historiography, diagrammatic illustration and even cobbling to achieve alternative readings of urbanity. Central to his work is an attempt to strip our architectural surroundings and daily spatial practices of purpose, constantly searching for ways to illustrate a city waiting, functionless and ephemeral.
Lawrence Abu Hamdan was born in Amman, Jordan and studied at Middlesex University. He has recently completed Marches, a project and publication commissioned by Artangel. Elsewhere his work has been exhibited at; Transmission Gallery, Glasgow, at Opera north’s 42 New Briggate gallery, Leeds and most recently at the Mercado da Ribiera for C-E-M Lisbon. Lawrence Abu Hamdan is also heavily involved with DIY music playing in bands and booking tours all across Europe.
Oliver Rees is an artist and writer who studied at Chelsea college of art and Goldsmiths College in London. His work engages with drawing in all its various guises and he has given talks on the work of Lawrence Abu Hamdan at Transmission Gallery, Glasgow, and has been included in recent exhibitions "lo Spazio gli altri" at the Carrara Bienale and in group shows 'is I the first person?' at Nib Bun Gallery London. Both Abu Hamdan and Rees are also part of the group running and programming the arts and events space at 113 Dalston Lane.
