Artist Vanda Playford will show her latest film Temazcal (2013, 23mins, HD video) and excerpts from an earlier film The Four Energies in Motion (2008, 54mins, 3 screen HD video). Both films draw on Playford’s ongoing experience of working in London and Mexico with a group of Mexican healers who use pre-Hispanic Mexhica medicine and from her own experience as a medical doctor. The films engage with the relation between patient and healer, with ritual in healing practices and reflect the artist’s own desire to reach outside the rationality of the Western medical cannon. Formally Playford explores the documentary format, extending and challenging it through various means including installation and colour.
Vanda Playford has worked as an inner city GP in London for the past 30 years. In parallel she has developed an art practice based primarily in photography and video. She completed a PhD in Fine Art at the RCA in 2005 where she researched the nature of the medical consultation in relation to ritual, symptom and storytelling. These most recent works have been exhibited in contexts as diverse as the Take a Deep Breath symposium, Tate Modern and Escuela Secundaria Tecnica Industrial Y Comercial Nº 22, a large Secondary School in the State of Mexico.
There will be time for audience questions and answers, led by Brad Butler.
